What is a khimar

A khimar is a long head covering that falls over the shoulders and the chest. You pull it on over your head and it needs no pins. At alsouq there are two, one layer and two layers, both in one size. What a khimar covers depends on its length, and that length is stated here in centimetres.

Fabric and layers

A khimar is worn over the head, so the cloth has to be light and hold its shape. One layer is the lighter of the two. Two layers sit over each other and let less light through, above all across the chest. Which cloth sits under which style is on the product page.

Length and coverage

One size, so the length is the only number that counts. The one layer measures 115 centimetres at the front. The two layer measures 100 centimetres in front and 130 behind, so it falls longer behind than in front. We state those figures in centimetres. Many shops give them in inches, which leaves the conversion to you.

Washing and care

Wash at 30 degrees and hang the khimar to dry. Not in the tumble dryer. Ironing is usually not needed, and is fine on low heat. The composition in percentages is on the product page.

The colours

The supplier makes these khimars in sixteen colours and we buy a small number of neutrals from that range. All sixteen are listed on the product page, so you can see what exists. You also see at once which ones we hold. We carry no bright colours.

Why alsouq

Across eighteen Dutch and Belgian shops the median price of a khimar is € 24.95. Three quarters of the market sits under € 30. That is what we set our prices against. Beyond that we buy once a season and see every colour before it goes online. Shipping leaves from the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the two covers most

The one layer falls furthest forward, at 115 centimetres. The two layer measures 100 centimetres in front, but lets less light through because of the second layer.

Do I need an undercap with it

Usually yes, as with a hijab. A simple cap holds your hairline in place and gives the khimar something to grip.

Does one size fit everyone

A khimar is pulled on over the head and falls loose over the shoulders. The fit is therefore in the length and not in the width. Choose on how much you want covered.
